Key facts
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the change in prices of goods and services bought by consumers — the headline inflation gauge. A core reading that strips out food and energy is published alongside it, and the Fed leans on both to judge the inflation trend.

Why the market watches it
CPI moves expectations for Fed rate hikes and cuts directly. A hotter-than-expected print typically fuels tightening bets — dollar up, gold and equities down — while a softer print tends to do the reverse.
How traders read it
Traders focus on the month-over-month and year-over-year trend in core CPI (ex food and energy) more than the headline. Volatility in the dollar, gold and the Nasdaq right after the release is very high.
