Key facts

The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the change in selling prices received by producers at the wholesale stage, and is used as an inflation signal that leads consumer prices (CPI).

Why the market watches it

Wholesale prices tend to pass through to consumer prices with a lag, so a steep PPI is read as upward pressure on future CPI. It is usually released around the same time as CPI.

How traders read it

PPI is read as a leading indicator for CPI. That said, CPI generally carries the larger market impact.
